Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Sure hope Dodong sticks around
thanks for the kiss of death lol

he has been working in this role for 11 weeks.

he has the equivelent of 6 weeks salary earned in defered bonuses and has earned the equivalent of 6 weeks pay in cash bonues.

he is making more money than he has ever made.
his family base is 2 km away.
he states he is not overworked
he stated that he likes the job.
his wife is not ambitious enough to run off to manila and then coax him to join her.

We have tried to cover every base but if he quits, so be it.

Are those the ones you're getting from splash parents? Wicked!

Mrs Oz is at the farm.

Apart from the desperate need for rain, things seem OK.

Lillian is diving her crazy but thats normal. She told me yesterday that her child was weak and with a feaver. When I asked what the childs temp was, she said she did not take it because she was busy working. This upset me. She took the kids temp. It was 36.4. normal. after extracting info from her, the kid was buised because fe fell the day before.

We had a good hatch. We also set quail, chukkar, guinea and chicken eggs, The muscovy duck eggs are under a duck and a couple of broodies.

the buff orps are all broody at once. the egg count has all but disappeared in that coop.

we have 30 birds shipping tomorrow.

He should be sticking around, if wife and kids are that close by.

I've never understood the difference between blue and self blue. Could someone enlighten me?

It's an entirely different genetics. Here's a pretty good explanation from another thread:

Self refers to a color that is solid and evenly distributed over the birds entire plumage and does not have any secondary color patterns ( like lacing) associated with the plumage color.

As Illia stated, self blues are actually lavender which is an expression due to a pair of recessive genes. The two genes dilute a black bird to light gray or blue color. The color is even and covers the entire bird.

Blue is expressed by an incompletely dominant gene. One blue gene produces a blue bird - two blue genes produces a splash bird. Splash is a whitish bird that has splashes of black or blue feathering.

Blue birds on the other hand have black lacing or feather edging associated with the plumage pattern; the head of the female is a darker color (dark blue to black) than the body and in males the pyle region is dark blue or black in color.

Crossing a blue with a lavender will be like crossing a blue with a black. You will get the same results because the lavender is recessive.

Blue X lavender = blue birds and black birds The blue birds may or may not have lacing or edging it depends genetics of the lavender bird and the blue bird.

Note that this explains why blacks are showing up where you might assume they shouldn't (and where they wouldn't with BBS genetics).

This is just what I needed to hear! I am only floundering with these birds' genetics. The Blue Wheaten hens were the only two chicks that hatched from 18 shipped eggs. They were presented as "show quality." I was looking for a Blue Wheaten cock to use with them, but there were none to be had at the Ohio Nationals. The only Ameraucanas I could find there were the pair of splash that I brought home. I have no idea of their background, I only assumed they were Blue/Black Splashes, but I could easily be wrong. They are both white with black smudges, but there could be some lavendar smudges for all I know.

When describing the color of the chicks above, I was just trying to cover the bases. There are black ones, light grey (lavendar?) medium grey (self blue?) grey bodies with black heads and wings (blues?) and there are also yellow chicks (white) and white-ish chicks (silver.) I have no idea what I will have when they grow up, but I know the resulting hens will lay really nice blue eggs!

When I offer them to people, I only call them Easter Eggers.
