Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Drove down to the San Luis Potosi (rio verde) part of Mexico. Loved it there. We went swimming January 1st at La Media Luna (huge lake) and the water felt great. Would love to go again.

Hope you get to make lots of trips with those babies of yours Oz.

Good Morning Everybody,

Hope all have a good weekend.

Not to change the subject but, I thought this might be interesting to everybody. Since Oz is more up to snuff than I am he may already be doing this. ??? In my attempt to learn more about chickens and trying to defeat boredom, I found this on the internet and think everybody might enjoy reading this. It's about sexing your chicks before they hatch.

Enjoy,

These have been run around a few times.... am afraid they have no scientific documentation behind them...... The shape of the egg is dependent on the shape of the hens Egg producing factory.... so to speak... You may be able to tell which hen laid which egg by shape and or color... but not the sex of the chick inside.

After they hatch there are a few ways to determine the sex....
Depending on the breed of chickens...
you can tell by:

wing feather growth

color difference between boy and girl

and finally by vent sexing which takes some training and a lot of practice and eyes that must have built in magnifiers... I have seen video of people vent sexing chicks as fast as they can grab them out of their bins. Vent sexing has to happen hours after they hatch... that's about the only time you can tell the difference.

Then once the chicks begin to fledge you can tell because usually the pullets fledge before the cockerels.

Knowing your breeds is helpful to know if the above methods can be used.

But all methods have to be done after they hatch.

As my little confused friends show I never know what to believe when I read something like that. I have also read that most hatches will be about 50 - 50 hen and rooster. the incubating that I have done and am now doing doesn't even match that. I've had some hatches that were closer to 90 - 10 in both directions. But, being the curious country boy that I am I may try it some day just to see what happens. ????

hatch 20 eggs and you could get a 10/90 split (we got 9 doeling goats in a row)

hatch 10,000 and you will get 5000 of each.

have fun guessing sex - I just sell straight run

Oz,

I gave up a long time ago on guessing sex. I just think it's hilarious what people will put on the I-net. In this time of modern technology there are some things that just have to be left to the will of mother nature. But, I have to admit without any shame that I am a curious person and a little hard headed at times and have to try things just to see what happens.

Getting ready to go to the airport.
