Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Mims you should be ablt to get rice Hulls.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_production_in_the_United_States

""The US Rice Producers Association represents rice producers in the six largest rice-producing states of Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas.""

this site came up when I queried rice hulls in Texas

http://morganbulkinc.com/

Here iN California the major distributor for rice hulls is Mallard Creek.

On average they are a bit more expensive than shavings they come in the same bales as shavings six cubic feet.

BUT I find they last twice as long. Because they dont compact and get soggy. I used them in my horse corral at a boarding stable because she wouldnt lay down on the muddy morass in the back... I dont blame her For a 24 x 24 corral I started with five bags... Piled them up in the middle and she dispersed them just by moving around and laying in them. Her corral only had shade.

Bot the chickens and the horse loved them. I used one bale per coop 6 x 12 mosly on the end where they landed from getting off the roosts. Initially. then a half bale about six months later.

dont be alarmed when they dife in and eat a bunch of it because the hulls have the odd bit of rice now and then. My horse finally figrued out it was more trouble than it was worth. When I did her corral the black birds would line up on the fence essentaially tapping their toes and looking at their watches waiting for me to get done. LOLL.

I'm in west Texas, where no rice is produced. It's all desert here. I called all the feed stores within 100 miles, and they all thought I was crazy. One will order them for me, but only if I buy some insane amount. :(

Gonzales TX is 413 miles away. I'll check out how much shipping is.

Dang... I am in The sonoran desert part above baja and about mid of the state line in California. I am about six hundred miles from the Sacremento valley which is where the rice is grown.

For what its worth It would be helpful to know what area you are located. I am a digger but need more info.

I'm in Lamesa, between Lubbock and Midland TX. I appreciate your digging. :)

Quote: http://buckmoorefeed.com/find-us/ so far closest one in Austin may be a drive but worth it if you like it. Buy a years worth.

Another resource is AG suppliers. Rice hulls are used as a soil ammendmennt as well. http://www.hotfrog.com/find/rice-hulls

Looks like Gonzales is the big one. Try Brewerys as well . they use them to filter beer. they might let you tag along on a purchase.

Still looking but have to go... OH and Spent beer grains are excellent forage for the chickens too.

Its just amazing

I would love for this story to survive 1 million views - not for the clicks, but the adventure causing them

I'm mostly a lurker as I rarely find I have anything to say! I just couldn't help but post that time! :D. I don't even have any birds at the moment!

I'm contemplating growing rice here since I have an abundance of water. I'm just not sure I have enough sun!
