Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Pig watch 2015 is still underway.

Our baby goat is much improved but an older doeling had a run in with a mamma goat and is injured.

She is weaned and was butted buy a doe and sustained some sort of injury to her front legs and can't walk. I am not sure what it is. It does not appear to be anything obviously broken.

She is our first 75% dairy breed doe so I am really hoping that she can pull through.

There are three does that were Buck Rogers offspring born last December/January that will be next to deliver. Probably early next year. They will be also 75% dairy goat. If we get 3 does I will have 5 that are 75% and 2 that are 65% and 12% Boer. We will separate these 7 and try and get a close to pure Nubian or tog to breed with them. At 80+% dairy goat, I am pretty confident that we will reach our goal of milkable goats.

It was a five year plan that it pretty much on track as we are at 2.5 years into the goat business.

10lbs of good cheese per week is definitely realistic with 7 or 8 does.

We planted Napier grass a while back and it will be harvested starting in February. By then I will need a shredder/chopper machine to cut it.

Currently we are getting tips of Napier grass for free as my father in law has started a business with a contact for 300 hectares of Napier grass to be sold to Japan. As he is in the propagation stage, we get the tips and he cuts the stems for replanting. It's a nice bonus.

The boys garden will be ready to harvest meter beans this week and several other vegetables very soon.

With the 18 eggs they are supplied each week along with 3 roosters a week and 2 ducks per month, they are pretty much self sustaining. They just need rice and fish.

The rice will always have to be bought but fish is the next big project.

I will be looking into using solar power to run the pump for the aquaponics system. If I can get a 600w system then it should be enough to drive a 1/3HP pump and charge 2 Marine batteries to keep it running 24/7.

The goal would be a 10000 liter tank divided into 2 to keep two stages of tilapia separate and the farm and family in fish.

Our mixed breed birds are laying up a storm now that they are getting good feed. Dodong really did some shortcuts that impacted our program.

We got 3 dozen mixed breed eggs yesterday for the first time. Inday takes 5 dozen per week home to Bacolod.

We may even start selling the eggs in Bacolod. The going price for farm fresh brown eggs is 120 pesos ($2.80) per dozen. 25 dozen eggs per month will cover 200kg of chicken feed. If we could sell 60 dozen per month we could even cover the salary of the caretaker.

Something to consider.

we are out of scalpels so we will try a 14g needle and if that does not work, a pocket knife

my instructions to a very nervous syrel

Soak knife in 1:4 bleach water to use as back up.
Step 2
Hold goat firmly
Step 4
Feel 4 fingers behind ribs on left side
Step 4
Clean area with alcohol
Step 5
Clean area with Betadine
Step 6
Wash hands in Betadine
Step 7
Put 14g needle on a syringe
Step 8
Insert needle in one inch. Pull back on syringe. It should pull back freely. If it pulls back freely then disconnect syringe
