Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Typhoons are scary but at least we know they are coming.

We get earth quakes both in so cal and in the Phil's. During the first 3 seconds its "wow and earthquake" and then its "WOW WE ARE HAVING AN EARTHQUAKE"
hello my friend

Hope all stay safe

Thanks Sally

The Typhoon made landfall in an area that is seasoned in the process so the losses should not be too great.

The north end of our Island will be at signal 1 - that could be enough to cancel the kids preschool and kindergarten tomorrow. They just have thise week and they are off for the year anyway.

I actually want the rain. The el Nino is going to be very hard on us as we maximize every square meter of our farm, a drop in rainfall will cause a drop in output.

The last el Nino was tough and we just had 3 sheep. We ended up giving them away as we had no grass. We are now less dependent on the grass but other plants have come into play.

Getting pig semen is not that easy and this week confirms my feelings that the market is ripe for us.

There are two mail order swine genetics suppliers in Luzon. Both cant ship because of delays with the holiday rush. They wont ship til Jan 9. Our pig 15 cycled yesterday. we would have to wait 6 weeks as her next cycle is still in the no ship zone. Thats about 3 sacks of feed with no output.

I contacted a guy I came across on Facebook that boasts pedigree pigs just up the road. I got hold of him. He charges P1200 ($27) for semen only, P2000 ($44) or "The biggest piglet" which sells for P2500 ($57) if his tech performs the AI.

He has 1 Landrace boar of good pedigree but it decided that it did not want to have a collection made yesterday morning. We were worried that we may miss the window which will start this morning. Fortunately we got the semen in time but such drama.

I stand that this is too much to pay and the local farmer cannot afford the service thus uses inferior boars (and still gets charges 1 piglet)

If we charged 500 ($11) for the semen and p800 ($1700) for the semen and a tech to service the sow, We could both make money and provide a valuable service.

After collection costs the semen would net $9. A boar can produce 20 doses a week Even if we sell 1/4th thats $200 per month on a feed cost of $20.
Six boars would be netting over $1000 per month with 25% productivity.

Sound great! But did you mean $1700 or $17?

Its 5:50 am in Tiling

The sow got her first dose of AI. Second dose in 12 hours

Goat 108 is being milked to supply "Miracle" with part of her daily needs

Then its off to the chickens

Oz,

Speaking of chickens, I got my first two Eggs from the all grown up babies yesterday. Those first two were very small like they are sometimes. Now I'm waiting for the bigger ones to start rolling out. Out of the original 20, I have 4 hens. Got roosters coming out of my ears.
