getting to a delaware

Here are some pics of my test batch of F2's

Jeff is correct.

You want to keep the white/cream/buff chicks and use them in your next cross. These are gong to be silver columbian or buff columbian or barred silver columbian (delaware) or barred buff columbian ( rhodbar). When they get to be sexually mature adults, then determine how to proceed with the next cross. You do not need the gray or black chicks.

I have made delaware in the past. While doing my work, the chicks that have he brightest white down were silver but not always. You want your chicks to be a bright white color.

It is very simple- keep the lighter chicks and give away the black or gray chicks.

Go ahead and hatch more chicks with the light down color- if you have enough silver wheaten adults to choose from-you can look at other factors- egg laying ability, growth rate etc.

I don't understand this part of what you said "You want to keep the white/cream/buff chicks and use them in your next cross. I thought I was only suppose to keep the barred silver Colombian (Delaware) and then proceed with my F3's and out of them keep the best looking ones for breeding purposes. Thanks Cory

At hatch these are the wheaten colored chicks it is hard to tell at that time which will be what, is all. In a few short weeks once they start feathering in some then you will see the white from the buffs. All the others buffs grey blue blacks will not be used in the next move for getting to a delaware pattern, but you have to keep those wheaten chicks till they can be color chosen.

Yes I have 12 chicks and 5 of them have white feathers with some black barring and the other 7 are buff.

pretty fair odds of getting 5 silvers out of 12 wheatens now just hope that 1 or 2 are pullets, that's the hard ones to get and what you need too hatch numerous eggs from (of course, HUH?)LOL there is a reason behind this which I don't know but the least you get from the F1s are the silver columbian pullets, par for the course, as its not an easy task for sure. Delawares are hard to make. Huh Mrs. Kathy?

What Jeff said plus.

If you sell or give away the light chicks- you will not have any birds to cross. That is why I said you have to keep them. When they get older, you can determine if they are silver barred columbian. You most likely will not have a male and female silver barred columbian. I can not explain all the options because I do not know what you have. There is more than one way to make an apple pie. There is more than one way to proceed with your breeding to produce a delaware. I can figure out how to get there using what ever you hatch. You may have a barred gold female and no barred silver females. What do you do then?????

I worked with Kathy on her dels.
