getting to know each other.

We had 2 chickens from 6 weeks old. They got to know us very well and we spent time hanging out with them every day. Well one turned out to be a rooster so we gave them both to a friend.

So last weekend we bought 3 new hens. 2 are 3 months old and 1 is 5 months. They came from a lady who had about 20. They hide everytime I come outside and don't come out until I am out of sight. They seem easily startled and not used to people.

I'm wondering if they will ever get used to me and the kids. I know it's only been a week but it would be nice if they came to say hello like the others used to. What can I do to help this process or are they too old to change now?

Bribe them with bugs,or watermellon,or cantalope.

put scratch in a coffee can, one of those red ones, and shake it and call, "here chick,chick" then throw it on the ground, and walk away. Do it each day, waiting a bit longer each time. the other way, I have calmed down chickens, is go sit with your coffee in the run. Just sit quietly and watch them, moving slowly when you get up or down. They'll get used to you.

However, I don't care for my chickens to jump on me, I just like them to come to me at my feet. And these chickens of your may not ever be lap chickens.

We got our first chickens last Spring and they were about 8 months old. I don't think they were handled much, as the person had lots of chickens. We would sit on a chair near them, throw some scratch down near the chair and they would come over. Next step was scattering some scratch and holding some in our hand, with our hand near the ground, so they would take the scratch from our hand. They all will come to us now. That being said, though, they are individuals. we have one who will let anyone pick her up, carry her around, sit on your lap etc. and the others are a little less thrilled to sit on your lap, although you can pick them up and hold them.

After a week of sitting with them and bringing a bucket of goodies every time I go out there they are finally getting used to me. They still run away at first but soon come out when I sit down. My 5 yr old son asked me why I stare at the chickens so much? Maybe I am getting a little obsessed but chicken tv is the best way to relax!

I have discovered that these hens love grapes!
