Getting to know you

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Well you certainly have come to the right place for all the fun and learning! Wow, Australia! I would love to travel there some day. Maybe once I don't have hoards of birds to care for. Ha!

Great to have you aboard and we do welcome you to our flock!
I know what you mean about our birds restricting travel. I often have to drive 150 kms to see a doctor or do some specialised shopping in the city and although we have accommodation there we can't use it as we need to be home to put them all to bed! I think the trick for all of us mother hens will be to get a house and bird sitter so that we can travel. I am sure you would love Australia - come on over some time!

Yes, they sure can keep you grounded. We haven't travelled in over a decade! LOL But the birds bring me so much joy, its ok. Definitely we all need bird sitters! :)

We haven't travelled ourselves for around 13 years, but luckily (as my husband is now quite ill) we built a sailing catamaran in 1993 and after cruising from S.E. Queensland to Cairns in Far North Qld. we took off in the late 90's and spent four years exploring the islands of Indonesia, then up to Singapore, Malaysia - going into just about every creek and river in the Malacca Strait - and on to Thailand. It was the most wonderful holiday. We returned to Australia totally broke, of course, but we had wanted to do the trip while we still had our health, not realising that John's medical conditions would deteriorate to its current state. However, we now have a lovely home which he built, in the mountains behind Cairns, with beautiful views, it's very quiet, we have wonderful neighbours who aren't bothered by our roosters crowing and, of course, our gorgeous birds. So, it's all been worth it and we have fantastic memories. These days, instead of photos of sailing scenes (didn't have phones with cameras then!), my phone and camera are full of photos of the birds!! Life sure has changed, and I love it! This photo is of our boat on anchor outside a village on a small island in eastern Indonesia. I think I counted 25 villagers on board with me and there were a heap of canoes hanging off the back. It was the most wonderful life, but having enjoyed it back then, I can live with the memories and make new ones with my feathered babies. I am where I wish to be.

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. "Getting to know you" - I recall the song, but can't remember which musical / film it came from (and it will be going around in my tiny mind for the next few hours, I'm sure

). It sounds like you have been bitten well and truly by the chicken maths bug, which is no bad thing.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre

Oh darn! When I said "Getting to know you" I wasn't thinking about THAT song. And now it's swirling around in my brain, too. I'm singing it silently as it would drive my husband wild. I couldn't remember what movie it was from so went to Dr. Google - The King and I!! Now, I have to try to get it out of my head.

It had the same effect on me yesterday! The King and I - of course!
