A couple of days ago I stayed out a little later than anticipated and got home
about 30 minutes after sunset. Normally my chickens get in their coop about
dusk and all is well and I locked them in for the night. The rare
night I'm late my puppy knocked the fence open and my daughter rounded up
the chickens and all were accounted for. Thirty minutes later I enter the scene
and notice one little hen missing. I believe she got loose where my daughter didnt
get the fence back together just right. We immediately searched for the little hen to no
avail, but I did her something run through the woods behind our house. The next
day and ever since I kept looking and calling for this very tame friendly little hen
yet when I'd go outside all would be quiet. There is nothing to see. Not even one red feather
or turf of down. Every now and then throughout the day today I would hear that very
distinctive loud peeping of a lost and distressed chick. Each time it I heard it I would
go running outside. Finally I thought maybe the little hen was hiding when she heard
approaching footsteps so the last time I went out I very gingerly walked around dried leaves
and peeked about trying to be quiet as possible. My heart was racing as I'd just heard the peeping
under my bedroom window and knew she had to be there this time when I went looking for
her. When I rounded the last corner of the house I stayed behind the wall as much as possible
and peering around with just one eye a blue jay popped into view and began to peep a few chicken
notes before catching a glimpse of me and disappearing into the woods. SIGH.... I just can't believe a
few unguarded minutes and my sweet little hen is gone forever. Why O why is always the
sweetest and the best. Darn bluejay really was spooking me good. Has anyone else had
another bird mimic their chickens? I have a friend that has a blue and gold macaw that clucked and
carried on chicken style but I didn't know wild birds would be such good mimics.
