Gilroy city council finally has gotten with the times and adopted an ordinance that will allow upto 6 small animals, including chickens, within city limits!!!! Super exciting. The new ordinance will go into effect in early April.

Not sure. I just recently started looking into our local laws and found they were restricted. A month later there was an article in the local paper indicating that city council proposed to change and I started following to see if it was adopted. Maybe start by contacting and gaining support from a city council member???

Yay!!! That is so exciting to hear!!!

Hi there,

Here's some background information on the small animal ordinance that was recently passed in Gilroy.

The ordinance was passed in early February by a 5-2 vote, and limits the number of small animals under 24 inches tall that residents can own. The ordinance also limits the number of small animals like rabbits, chickens, pigeons, turkeys, peacocks and other legal birds to six per resident.

Here's some additional info. Look under "New Business" http://gilroy.patch.com/articles/city-council-preview-933a07d1

The issue of regulating chickens and other small animals was originally brought to the council in the fall: http://gilroy.patch.com/articles/city-council-preview-bye-bunnies

I hope this info is helpful! Gilroy Patch is another local news hub for Gilroy residents.

This is good news to hear. I am sure there are a lot of happy people knowing they can now keep chickens. I know of one person who lives in Gilroy and she was keeping chickens (way more than 6) before this was even passed. Her neighbors must have liked her for not saying anything about her chickens. I am sure there were many other keeping chickens illegally as well. But nice they changed the law finally.

This is great news for us! :)

I have been raising chickens here for the past two years, and have always worried about getting turned in.. Of course, I still have over the limit, but now at least I wouldnt need to get rid of them all..

I was looking more into it, but wasnt able to find any more info, like if roosters are allowed or not, anyone see that info anywhere?

I would say because you are w/in city limits Roosters are not allowed due to the noise. I am somewhat a neighbor of your. I live in San Martin, out in the country on 7 acres.
