Gil's World - A sick Gil ?

I am wondering if she got sick because it's close to 100 degrees out and she didn't drink enough water the one day. That's the night she was shaking a little bit.

Or she drank too much too fast and overfilled her crop, thus the 'throwing up'?
Not sure about ducks but I give my chickens an occasional dose of electrolytes to help with heat stress.

I give a dose of Sav-a-Chick electrolytes/vitamins about once a week during heat waves.
It really seems to help....started this after they saved a heat stroked hen once.
Can mix up a smaller amount, just wrap the packet tight and store in a dry cool place.
Always have plain water available too.

Thanks for the replys everyone!! Gil magically was all better with no more symptoms. Not sure what happened but here's my guess. I bet the ac was off making it too hot and Gil ate too many pellets without stopping for water.

I will defiantly pick up some electrolytes because we have one more huge heat wave coming soon. I'll be prepared this time Gil!!

Glad to hear about the parasites not being common. I guess I should have realized I would have noticed them in her poop if that was really the issue. I was just so stressed she wasn't feeling her best.

Side note: Gil had lot's of fun at the creek today. I didn't get pictures because I went swimming with her! I will make an update soon with lot's of pics!!!

Oh you are so lucky to go swimming with Gil. I think that would be so much fun! Glad she's ok. I think it made all of us sick thinking that Gil was sick!

I was going to take more pics of her to post but... she's going through the molt from ... She looks like a monster!!! Poor Gil. She's getting some extra swim time and hopefully she'll look extra cute for pics after this molt! How long do they usually last? This is her first real molt and she's a little grumpy. (surprise get ready, next Saturday is her first birthday!) So will she be ready for her party in time?!

Awwww poor Gil! My rouen went through a really hard molt a few months ago and boy was she a cranky broad! Hers lasted for about 2 weeks and then all of the sudden she was beautiful again. I hope Gil gets birthday pretty in time for her party!

that makes me scared. My little penciled Spot went through a molt last year and she still looks like a raggamuffin

Molt going okay but I can't wait for her birthday. It is going to be SO MUCH FUN and the pictures are going to be SO STINKIN CUTE! So I think she's almost done with her molt but it's been rough!! She wouldn't eat her pellets without meal worms and I am being so serious!!!!! If I didn't mix meal worms in she wouldn't eat. Not to mention she stands there picking out the meal worms then remembers she's hungry and eats some pellets like an hour later. I am assuming this is just a cranky molt thing. I do want to pick up new food though because I am feeding a flock layer pellet from TSC and I feel like she could benefit from a duck only layer pellet. Does anyone have any recommendations on what pellet I should pick up? Has anyone ever experienced their duck not liking the flavor of pellet? I think Gil's just cranky but I wonder if she wants more flavor involved. She always has a bowl with oyster shell, grit, cracked corn and a tiny bit of treats (quack snacks or mealworms). She doesn't eat the cracked corn while it's warm out, I don't think she ever eats the grit but she does eat the oyster shell and treats. Did I spoil her flavor pallet? Are pellets too boring now? Or is she just cranky?!

If I cover the bottom of this, would you guys approve it as a daytime only outdoor pen for Gil? I need a duck run but I also need a bird aviary so this was my boyfriends 2 in 1 idea. I am probably going to have to wrap it with more wire to makes the holes smaller for the birds so while I'm at it, I'll cover the bottom up too. Duck safe for the daytime? Yes, yes... the outdoor aviary soon follows with a duck coop so we can get 2 ducky friends outside. Long term goal right now is convince grandmom to keep 2 ducks in her backyard up the street and we'll make sure they're Gil's friends so they can hang outside. My backyard just isn't safe enough with a creek running through it. The creek brings at least 10 foxes a day through the property. Also my grandmom's backyard is a little less private so the one neighbor has a great view and is always outside. No clue how this will go, do I get ducklings and let Gil think she raised them or 2 bonded ducks and see if we can make Gil friends with them?

^ Under closer inspection that mesh wire will not do. If I wrap the whole thing with hardware cloth, will it work? Is TSC the cheapest place to get hardware cloth? Is there a certain size hardware cloth I should get or are they all relatively the same?
