Gil's world! Update

I’m always happy when I see Gil updates :love I love the videos, and adore her little squeals of happiness while she forages in the puddles! I have a random question for you - Does Gil sleep through the night? How does your schedule affect hers? Does she wake you up with loud quacks when it’s time for breakfast?

I found that when the water bowl was laid on the pads, they were more intrigued to get them. What you could try is something similar to a set up like this. A plastic shoe tote with a hole cut in the lid. A cookie sheet and a cookie cooling rack. Place a puppy pad in between the sheet and the rack. It will really absorb the water.

Another genius idea!!! I have a car battery cover (basically a plastic tote) flipped upside down and I put her 2 waterers in there. It still ends up wet outside of it on the pads because... well ducks have a way of getting water everywhere! I could easily get a rack like that from the dollar store or even 5 and below and put an extra pad underneath!!! Pictures to come, thanks!!! Life saver!

Gil sleeps through the night really well with the exception of last night. If I’m awake, she’s awake but if I lay down and act like it’s bed time, she gets super quiet and goes to bed. When lights are off she will never full blown quack but she will make the little squeaks but no one outside the room can hear those and I sleep through those now. As far as breakfast goes, I use big porcelain dog bowls that she can’t knock over. Since she has constant access to lots of food and water, she only eats when she’s hungry. So no waking me up for breakfast because there’s always something in her bowl! She’s pretty flexiable with my schedule working with hers. She gets grumpy if her pen isn’t cleaned around lunch time and that’s the only time she really yells at me. She takes her bath while I clean her pen so as long as she has a clean pen and a bath before it’s too late, she’s a happy camper. She even lets me sleep in when I get the chance! When I wake up, she is soooo excited and gets pretty loud (the next door neighbor thinks it hilarious to hear her quacking through the window) but luckily no one minds the noise because it’s only during the day time. She knows what “shhhh” means but more importantly she knows what lights out means. Other than her pen and bath, she does not care what we do or when. She’s pretty content doing whatever the day brings. I feel like I am quite lucky for this! I still cannot get over waking up every morning to an egg in her little house!! She is pretty straight forward and tells me what she likes. She’s less complicated than the people in my life, she’ll just tell me what she wants!! Lol! She’s one well behaved, quite happy, extremely spoiled sweetheart!

Hah, I forgot to tell you guys!!!
Today when I woke up she was still in her house which is pretty odd. She lays her egg in her house, quietly, between 6-7 AM. I get up a little bit after and grab the egg out of her house. When I woke up and she was still on her house, I walked over afraid she was having laying trouble. When I walked up to her pen, she hopped right out of her house. Her egg was HOT. They’re always room temp because they sit for an hour or so before I grab them. This one was HOT. SHE WAS SITTING ON HER EGG!!!! She gladly gave it up when I walked over to her though. Maybe the dog was in the hallway so she was guarding the egg for me??? I’m not sure why she was sitting on it, she’s never done that before. I really don’t think it had anything to do with goin broody, she was more so just guarding it because she knows her eggs are a present for me everyday! I guess she thought the dog might steal her present??? Who knows but it was pretty funny.

If it was hot she probably just laid it and not had a chance to allow it to cool. Mine like to lay on them for an hour after laying them. Mine lay between 4-5 am. I do daily clean up by 5:45am and sometimes have rush them off the next! Lol

Gil never sit's on them after laying so I guess she took after your girls and sat for an hour! I collected it around 9am and I'd assume it was laid between 6-7 like her typical schedule. There's a possibility she laid late that day, if that's normal for new/first year layers!
