Hi. On sunday I got two baby chicks at an Ace Hardware store.
Ginger is a Rhode Island Red
Fluff is a Leghorn
I'm not 100% on their age and just want a lil input.
I'm new to this- actually RAISING chicks, I never got one as a pet before they came and left during easter and I've always loved baby animals.
I'm a vegetarian so they are JUST pets.
Ginger is very affectionate with me, seeking me out, jumping out of the brooder to sit on my lap. Fluff follows, doesnt really like the petting like Ginger.
However, I'm concerned they don't like the heat lamp? They seem comfortable in the brooder yet they always jump out and I don't have the heart to force them or lock them in. I let them hop around my room and eventually have to clean up all their poop lol. Thats not the problem, it's just they spend more time sleeping on my feet/in my lap (ginger) around me (fluff) that i wonder why they dont want to be in the brooder? My room is the warmest in the house. Around 80 degrees now with the heat lamp on. The rest of the house is around 70. It's never cold. I'm honestly IN LOVE with them. I want to make sure I have posts with updates of them in case I lose the phone or anything. Sorry if this is long! Anyway! I just want some input on age and feel free to comment anything!
Also can anyway make a guess on ages? I'm honestly super excited having them here.
sorry for the excessive going off the tracks

Welcome to BYC---Very cute they are! I'm guessing between one and two weeks old.
Probably the heat lamp is too hot for them. Do you have a thermometer to check temp? Can you raise the lamp? Another option-you could take the bulb out and put in a regular incandescent bulb (not LED) of 100 or 75 watts. Heat lamps are best for large numbers of chicks, you can make a small brooder warm enuf w a small bulb.
Good luck!
