I like Maple Valley too! My in-laws live in Kent.
I don't know how they are going to do over the winter. This is the first time I've had chickens, so I hope they manage. I bought a storage shed from the high school construction class, now I'm insulating it and building the nest boxes. It's 8X8 with a roof vent, and I'm adding styrofoam insulation on the floor and batting up the walls. All of that is going to be sheeted over with thin plywood which I'm painting with waterproofing so that it will be easier to clean (I hope)... I do have electricity out there and there will be a heater/light (not a heat lamp but a Electric Infrared Heater and a heater under the water (if needed). I will have to play it by ear, and plan to make adjustments as I go.
My goats manage in a 3-sided shelter and last winter was 3 weeks of 35 below, so I'm hoping the chickens will be able to make it too.
I have asked all the local chicken junkies about their arrangements and I believe my plan is better than some
