Well the weather was beautiful here and I had a chance to get the chicken run part of the tractor assembled so the girls got a chance to come outside and be real chickens. Eating grass, scratching for bugs, and other various chicken activity. Then all it took was a night crawler or 2 and they learned that I am the "go to" guy for treats now. They're still a bit skittish but they are quickly warming up to people and are much more tolerant of being held and transported to the outside pen.

As I was returning them to their upstairs pen yesterday one got a wild hair (or feather perhaps) and ran up my arm and perched on my shoulder.

This morning they were almost excited to see me when I went to change their water and check on them. It may have just been that 2 of them decided to perch on the chicken wire side of their brood pen. Looks like some perches are in order for this evening.

I wish I'd had gotten chickens years ago. They're so much fun.

Glad you're enjoying them. I've had them on and off all my life but still find almost nothing more relaxing than pulling up a lawn chair and watching them free-ranging around me. I have a batch of chicks that are in an outside run during the day now but in the evening I let them out to free-range for the last 45 minutes or so before bedtime and still enjoy sitting and watching them learn about their world.

No one told us how entertaining chickens were. Ours are a year old and we still enjoying sitting with them each day!

There are two things that make my day worthwhile when I get home from work: the dogs greeting me at the door with wagging tails, and the rush of the chickens and ducks to the run gate when I open the back (kitchen) door.

After I give the dogs their treats, and the chickens their treats, I gather the eggs and then sit for a while watching the chickens. Some of them come up to me and tell me chicken stories, one will jump in my lap to do so.

Then, when everybody's settled down and the chickens have gone to coop for the night, my cats come settle next to me on the sofa (with the 2 dogs) and all is good.

By the way, I let my chickens free range in the back yard, out of their run, this weekend. I had planned on doing some gardening (mostly weeding the grass which is THIS tall) but I spent the time watching the chickens, instead. I think I'm going to have a very late harvest this year..... I haven't planted a THING yet!

(First Spring with chickens - I bought them as chicks last October.)
