Girl's Grass Box

The chicken wire goes right on top of the box. That way the grass grows up the width of the 2x6 and then out of the wire. So they can get to a little of the grass below the wire, but not much at all and it doesn't end up killing it. I would do one thing different though, put a piece of wood (pros would call it a spacer maybe??) across the middle width wise to keep the wire from bending down a bit when they get on top of it. For the seed, I picked up a cheap bag of rye at Walmart for around $5 that will last a long time. They also love eating around the edge of their fencing where I planted the seed too. They are little beggars, always looking for a treat.

I need to get you a picture of the Sand Spa with them lounging in it. Too funny.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes please do get a pic of the Spa. I would love to see it as I am sure many others would as well.

Idea stolen

AND, I may use all my grow lights in the winter so they can have fresh grass when it is -10 degrees out!

I agree with everyone this is a great idea! Thanks for the info. We are working on our new run now and it looks like we will need a small addition

I use recycled plastic bread bins you find at bakeries or grocery stores. I put a piece of black garden fabric on the bottom to stop the soil from falling out. Then I toss whatever "extra" seeds I have laying around in the bread bin, let it cook for a few weeks in the garden, and then switch them out in the run. Usually I have 2 in process and one being destroyed. When the chickens are done with them, they dust bathe in it for a while.

Sometimes the chooks get beets, radishes, grass, clover, lettuce, or carrots. Lots of variety for the discerning chicken

Extra bonus- the pans help block out the sunlight & keep down the weeds in the garden.

Great idea! I'm gonna steal it too..
I hate not letting them in my yard..i feel so bad.

what is poultry fencing and you just put it right on top of the grass? For some reason I cant picture this. What a great idea. I want to do it too if i can figure that part out.

Erin,

The poultry fencing is nailed or stapled to the top of the wooden box to keep the chickens from getting to the roots of the grass because they will destroy it quickly. Home Depot or Lowes will carry it in small rolls. Grass is grown right in the dirt below the box. Everyone remember to put a cross piece of wood to brace the middle. Mine needs that addition.

Here's a better picture of their "salad bar".
