Do you like goats? I know you think the Nigerian Dwarfs are cute. I've spent positively days trying to bring DH more around to the idea. Why or why is he so thick headed?

So, after all the work, I've decided not to get the spotted goat, the mini nubian. I was thinking about it, and she's not a cooperative milker really. And, shes not the same breed as the one I'm absolutely getting. I've decided to just get another Nigerian Dwarf, so one male can cover them. And, they produce up to 4 kids (like the one I'm buying). Folks get 300+ per girl kid for those around here. (holy cow) And, it takes 3 dwarfs to equal the food one full size goat will eat, and they give more milk pound for pound. The 3 girls equaling one Nubian will give 25% more milk, and that milk will give 2 lbs 8 oz cheese vs the 1 lb 12 oz of the Nubian. (Nigerians have like 10% butterfat, good for making soap and cheese and skin lotion and stuff).

Hmm if she's not a cooperative milker then I don't blame you for not wanting her. Sounds like breeding Nigerian Dwarfs would be a much better business investment.

I suppose. They eat a lot less, 3 can live on 1/2 acre. So, if this is like chicken math, I can keep about 500......

Seriously though, I was real interested, as she's due to kid about Feb. 1st, which meas more milk soon, but since Ava just freshoned (had kids) last month, and should have 8-10 monthes of milk totaly (until July at least- maybe as long as 2 years or more) I could probobly get a doeling that'll be breeding size in another 2-3 monthes, and then breed her, and about the time Ava is likely to dry up, the other will be freshoning the first time.

Glad I bought the milker, casue they'll probobly have tiny tits.

Sounds like you'll have you hands full with all of this milk! You can do so much with goat milk!

I'm guessing my clan will drink about half once they've gotten over the idea of it. I don't let them drink all they want just now, but I will be bugging them to drink it soon! I don't know how much Ava will produce though. It maybe as little as 1 cup a day, or as much as 3 qts. My old Saanans produced about 5 qts a day. I really want to avoid having that much. If I get 1 qt a day, I'll be delighted! That'll leave me enough to make a lb of cheese every week, unless we make too much ice cream and butter. When I decided to go for it when DH started to come around, I knew I wanted little ones.
