Well, I'm back, but its several hours later.
Its always the most fun when all the Amiga's are here.....
So, had a surprise encounter today. Let me start by saying I'm not afraid of snakes. That said, I'm not to found of venomous ones, like copperheads. Even less excited when the kids discover one, when they are up, and it is down below them.
I went for my snack, and heard the girls squawking (that would be my children, as opposed to a bird), so I went out to investigate. In the back yard we've got two humongous metal reels that used to hold very big plastic tubing (like 8" heavy stuff used by elect company), they're like 16" across, and we have them on their sides in low spots, and the girls climb all over them. They were up in their favorite perches, and somebody spies this snake, making its way UP the reel.
(they climb trees ya know) So, I go to rescue the damsels in distress, and discover its a copperhead. They are quite venomous, but not stupid, so I try to remove it with a stick and the darn thing just keeps using the stick to gain altitude. To make a long story short, it turned out to be a great challenge to get it down without getting bit....it definitely wanted to bite me before it was over, and to be honest, I kinda wanted to bite it back.
I've got scarped toes, a blister, and a humongous bruise (and all on the right side) from this "easy" snake rescue. Girls ended up bailing (onto me) as the snake eventually got up to them, and just hung out up there sunning itself most of the afternoon. Guess it likes a little breeze with its 105* sunshine. They girls were forced to go climb the other one, which they declare to be less desirable, since it is rustier. Big wah. Snake is fine, btw, and more clever than I'd given it credit for. Once it was getting late afternoon, I rolled the reel, and caught him, and transported him about a mile away by the river. He doesn't belong at my house.
