If your egg had veins (day 5 visible day 9 for sure) and you could view them clearly, and they are gone totally, and all that's left is a red blob, the egg died. If you still see veins extending out to the edges of the egg, your golden. Remember, some eggs take up to 3 days to start sprouting. Not ideal, but real. That means if you set 5 eggs, and by day 5, 3 had sprouted veins, the other one or two may not show veins (due to late start) for another 3 days after that. They usually also hatch a day (or two or three) later.
If you do not see any veins by day 10, toss it. If you saw veins and they left completely, toss it. If you see even one vein still working away, and the mass in the egg gets bigger at all (um, don't check every day, so you'll notice differences) your egg is still alive. Now that said, remember that they can die at any time, even 2 days before hatching.
Just because a bator goes to 105 for an hour doesn't mean your eggs died. The inside of the egg takes longer than the thermometer at the surface to change temps. More mass means more time. If the thermometer reads high, do not panic. If it reads low, do not panic. MONITOR the bator, in 30 minutes it maybe perfect again. When the heats on, the thermometer feels warmer and senses the heat increase, and can say its 102, when in fact, the eggs are still at 99.5. You need to get a soft toy filled with water (like a dog toy you fill in the sink with a whole that squeeks is good) and stick a thermometer into it. Or buy a "water weasel" from a toy store. (Its like a water filled tube that has a "whole" in it) Put a thermometer in one of these (like a human thermometer is great!!!) and keep it dead center. Then, when you want to know what temperature your eggs are on the inside, where it matters, you just look at this thing. You just put it into your bator, and keep it there with your eggs. (I have an auto turner, so mine is bread tied to the egg turner, just off center of the actual bator. (make sure the water weasel or toy is about egg sized, BTW)
These are "water weasels" or "water snakes" if you grab one end, it rotates on itself. Hard to hold a bit, but if you put a thermometer in one (stick it to the "whole" in one end, and roll it down over half the thermometer) you'll have the inside temps of your eggs. I use these, to get an accurate pic of where my temp stands. Its very very helpful, and can be ordered online. Office playground sells smaller ones that I buy. These will keep you from panicing (unless needed).![]()
Don't forget to calibrate your thermometer!!!!!! (it should read 32* F in a cup of ice water after it sets 60 seconds - don't read it unless its dead center in the ice water - don't touch sides or bottem or air with the silver tip)
. PM me and I'll fill you and Marty in.
