Give me your best advice on discouraging broodiness!

It seems almost cruel to make them get off the nest. we don't even have a rooster but they want to set those eggs...

I think it's better for them to be broken (as mean as it can seem) if you're not going to give them chicks or let them hatch. Being broody can be hard on their health when it goes on for a long time and some hens will sit for months (well beyond the 21 days of normal incubation) so they can get really run down.
