A friend of ours has to get rid of his pigeons and asked me if I wanted them for free. I told him I wasn't sure. I really don't know anything about them. He has white homers and some fancy feather footed and racing and such. I think I will take them. There is probably about 30 in all. What do I need to know before I get them? Best feed? He feeds scratch, but aren't they supposed to have special feed? Problems housing them around chickens? Any info. hints or tricks to taking care of them will be appreciated.

Scratch feed is fine, but not the best nutritionally for any bird. If there aren't any pigeon mixes near you, you can mix some layer pellets and wild bird seed. No problems housing around chickens. My chickens roost in a small section right inside the door of one of my lofts. Separated from the pigeons only by wire.
The homers you won't be able to release at your house unless they are a month or two old. All the fancy ones can be released after a month of being kept in.
