Are 7 day old chicks too young for treats? From what I have read they need sand correct? Is this a special thing TSC would sell or do you just get dirt from the yard? Appreciate the help......

Patricia Foreman, author of many chicken books, recommends you start new chicks out with a small box of play sand in the brooder. I got my bag at Lowe's, but any home improvement store carries play sand. My chicks loved it. They eat it and take dust baths in it. She also recommends giving them chopped up boiled eggs at about a week old, with some veggies added. I mixed some grated carrots and finely chopped spinach in with the eggs, and the chicks went wild. My chicks will be five weeks old tomorrow and I still give them the boiled eggs/veggie treat every morning, and they can hardly wait. They are on my sun porch near my kitchen door. When they hear me start to make coffee every morning, they start raising a ruckus that doesn't settle down until I put their treat meal in the brooder. They scarf it down in less than five minutes.
