Hi all,
I am from the Midwest (U.S.A.). I have not had a chance to see if this forum supports foriegn county memberships. I have raised chickens for 30+ years off and on which was dictated buy our jobs. My wife has always worked and most of the past 30 years I have had 2 jobs one usually a Business we owned. I am unable to keep this up any longer due to past injuries and a too early onset of old age. We're looking foreward to getting to know you all and I hope I can be a helpful addition to the Forums. I have a situation right now though.

I recently bought some chicks that I know nothing about. Our intended day old chicks (Barred Rocks) where messed up in shipping making their health in question at that point since they were bounced around and been setting in several places awaiting to be delivered. The weather was cold and wet, early spring in the Midwest, so the feed store dealer where we always order through talked us in to a - substitute. He claimed they were "EVEN BETTER" for meat and egg production. Hind sights 20/20 but he was getting rid of growing chicks that he needed to make room for if the other ones came in, these were3 days to a week old. So we bought 30 of them. He called them, and I am not sure my spelling is correct, CYCADAS or CICADAS or SYCADAS which I can't find info on these chickens. I felt more at ease buying them 1- I have bought chickens from him for 30 years 2- As funny or strange as it sounds is because I am familiar with an insect name that sounds like that and I have fishing fly's I use named this. This sounds lame at best but is true and the situation is as well.

I am so sorry about your first batch of chicks ordered. Shipping can be brutal on them, especially during these winter months. Barred Rocks are a great breed to keep, and you should still consider keeping them in future.

I do not know what breed you may be talking about here. There are Cubalaya chickens, although not very common and listed on the Threatened list of chickens, they are good for meat and eggs.

There are also Cayuga Ducks that I am sure are great for meat and eggs as well. There will be others stop by here to welcome you that will know more than I do about what you are talking about, so I do apologize. My breeds skills stop at the breeds that I keep!

You might also call the feed store back and ask for a proper spelling of this breed.

Welcome to our flock and if you have any other questions feel free to ask! We also have a nice learning center with lots of great articles on raising and keeping poultry...

So glad you could join and I hope you can get this figured out soon!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks, so sorry about the Barred Rocks you lost in transit. Do you have pictures or can you describe what your chicks look like? I wonder if he was saying the name of one of the sexlinks, feed stores often carry them. TwoCrows gave you some great tips on where to get started reading on BYC. There are quite a few members from all over, you might want to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread

I would call him and ask for the breed name again. Be sure to post a picture in the what sex/breed is this thread.
