Frost sighed again. "You see, Flame, no one wants you to die. And I'll treat you well when the vote is over. You will still have to be punished, but after that, you'll be treated well - so long that you don't try killing Sapphire. She was innocent from any reason you may have thought it was reasonable to kill her, Flame."
 
Lana was feeling rather upset. She knew that no wolf deserved to be put to death, but she was worried about what would happen if Flame flared up again and caused chaos in the pack. She was also alarmed at Mitts' behavior, not because she didn't like Mitts, but because it seemed to be creating tension. Lana thought back to her last days in the zoo, and about how she had comforted Mitts when Mitts had fallen 25 feet into the enclosure. She thought about Flame's attempt to drown Sapphire, too, and wondered how the vote would turn out. If they voted for Flame to die...how would they even go about doing it? Flame was a strong wolf. The picture of Tooth, the former alpha of the zoo pack, lying dead, came back to her.
 
Mitts sat in the den, watching Frost and Flame. She had just come in so she would stop being harassed for trying to help Flame. She hoped her plan B would work. She knew she wasn’t strong enough to get Flame out of camp, with all the other wolves trying to get her to stay, so she thought of a new plan. If she showed that she was that desperate for Flame to stay alive, maybe the others would be more forgiving.

Mitts accidentally made a noise knocking her fake leg against the floor of the den, and realized she was probably just detected.

Mitts felt a sigh of relief. She was a bit embarrassed about how she acted, but hey, Flame would probably be fine. Mitts wouldn’t let Flame die, or at least she would have to go down with her. Probably the second option.
