(I think it says wolves change frequently between upper middle rank and lower mid rank... I don't know about the others ranks, and I may be wrong...)

(I would think definitely no more than 3 betas per pack. Realistically, most wolf packs are made up of family members only; the parents are the Alphas, their offspring fill the other ranks. Loners are rare, and loners joining pack is a rare occurrence.)
