Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out for some help with a sick hen. This is the first serious ailment we've experienced with one of our hens and I'm just worried to death.

We have a poor GLW that stopped laying and eating a couple of days ago. Probably the most significant change in her environment has been the heat wave we've been having. Temps were in the high 90s peaking at 102 two days ago. Temps are back to 80 today. At first I thought the heat must have really taken a toll on her, but she hasn't bounced back. Has anyone had any experience like this? We really want to help our poor girl get better.

Here's what's going on:

We have a sick 14 month old Gold Lace Wyndot. Our other 2 hens are perfectly normal.

Our GLW was laying fine until 2 days ago then stopped. Also stopped eating.

Still drinking water voluntarily. It helps if I move it in front of her. Started electrolytes yesterday and continuing today. Added probiotics to her water today.

Her crop is empty. She's showing no interest in food. Have tried to feed a bit of her favorite treats to get some interest. Today she ate less than a teaspoon of grubs and nibbled at some scrambled eggs. But for the most part she won't even go for the grubs which she loves.

Pooping fine up until 2 days ago. Then, her poops became clear & watery with white urates mixed in and only a small amount of green solids (pics below). No signs of blood or intestinal lining. About a month ago we had a fecal float test performed because she was not acting like herself. She started sitting on the ground a lot and was generally less active. The test came back negative for all 3 of our hens.

She's generally alert and aware of her surroundings, but she wants to lie down and doesn't want to move much. I suspect that she's getting pretty weak from not eating for a second day.

We checked for mites and have not been able to detect any.

Checked her abdomen and it feels normal. Could not detect an egg - if she were egg bound I suspect she'd be in a lot worse shape than she is right now.

If she doesn't show any sign of improvement by tomorrow we're going to seek out help from a vet. But please if anyone can offer any guidance we'd really appreciate it.

Thank you so much in advance.
-Mark

How old is she?
Did you feel inside her vent for an egg?

Oops. Forgot to list her age. She's 14 months old. We haven't felt inside her vent for an egg yet. Have only done an external exam by gently pressing on her belly and around her pelvic bones.

Would examining inside her vent be too stressful in her weakened condition?

Maybe, but no stressful than a bath/soak. If she won't drink or eat there isn't much you can do expect tube feed her.

Ok. Thanks.

She's drinking plenty of fluids. Just not eating anymore.

I would soak her in a warm epsom salt bath and feel inside for an egg.
You mentioned that you would think she would be worse than this if egg bound but these are the symptoms off being egg bound too.

KikisGirls - thanks for the replies. We just gave her a soak in warm water and checked inside her vent. But no egg. She did eat gobble up some treats - 2 raspberries and about a tablespoon of diced up peach. I could tell she was starving. But she had her fill so we dried her off, gave her some water and put her to bed. I'll post back tomorrow with an update on her condition.

Good job!
Get some of her feed and soak it in a little water over night...then tomorrow try mixing a scrambled egg into it, to see if she will eat that.
