I have heard from an old poultry keeper that a teaspoon of glycerin will stop the water freezing up during the winter. Apparently it never mixes with the water and simply floats on the top. Does anybody actually know if this works and could it harm my hens?

If a sheet of plastic floated on the surface, would it prevent the water from freezing?

You could take a pan of water, add some glycerin, and place it in your freezer and give it a try.

I doubt it works.
