I just noticed we are having lots of gnats again this year. Do you have problems with them bothering your chickens? And what solutions have you come up with?
When I had adult chickens, I kept a fan on so the breeze would deter gnats, but I just have chicks now, too young to put under a fan, I think.
 
I feel for you ... I have not lost any chickens, I have my flock of 8 10wk old pullets, and I just couldn't figure out why they started staying in their coop all day. I have a camera on the coop so could see them from work. After investigating I found out the reason was gnats.. I dont know what kind they are but they are driving them crazy.. but I found the solution. Autozone, vanilla car fresheners. I tried spraying vanilla around the coop, and on the birds (diluted of course) but it didnt last long. The air fresheners worked.. content birds once again..

THE GNATS ARE TERRIBLE WHERE I LIVE IN MISSISSIPPI, I LIVE BEHIND THE LEVEE IN THE WOODS ON A LAKE, AND I CANT EVEN GO OUTSIDE AND SPEND TIME WITH MY 10 WEEK OLD CHICKS BECAUSE THE GNATS DRIVE ME CRAZY.. I WAS WORRIED THEY WERE DRIVING MY CHICKS CRAZY.. SO THE VANILLA FRESHENER REALLY WORKS??

Worked for me like a dream. I just ringed the run with them, I even put a couple in the coop, just in case.

The Black Flies/Buffalo Gnats bite humans too,
leaving running blood and/or nasty welts that last for weeks and they can kill livestock.

There are so many types of insects, is why I captured, froze and photographed one to get a positive ID from the pros.
 
Here in central Illinois we are inundated with rain. The Buffalo gnats are getting really bad. I noticed this afternoon my girls were on the roost at 5:45. I got to checking them out and little blood spots on the exposed skin around the head. They are scratching a lot also. I will be picking up anything vanilla tomorrow. I also read dryer sheets work. Any thoughts on that?
