No kidding, starlings are smart! Used to work at a rescue facility that would rehab everything that could be saved - including starlings. No one else would take them, so we got a lot of them.
They could mimic speech and problem solve. I remember one that was in the facility long enough to mimic what we said to each other. And they could get out of the set ups we had for other birds. Ended up having to house them in the cages reserved for raptors, magpies, crows, ravens, and jays. They'd stalk us, too.
Nasty little buggers, but so dang beautiful in flight...
