goat babies dying

I have 2 doelings that are probably bred. One is just starting to develop an udder. I had asked around and no one had told me we were in a deficient area.

How would one find a vet to prescribe Bo-Se? Is there anything I could give them that would be similar without a vet? Can I crush up some selenium pills I take?

You can buy BoSe gel for goats/sheep online from Valley Vet without a prescription.

we had 4 more babies born yesterday....they are doing good right now....we are supplement feeding the weaker ones.....there is alot of breeding issues with boer goats in the eggsfile breeding the babies have trouble with their legs when born....but in a few days they are ok....also....if you put your finger in their mouth and it is cold they will not suck ....we have to warm their bodies then they will suck milk....goats are so hard to raise....keeps us so busy.....we gave bo-se shots to the babies last night

i always give my does a shot of bose(selenium) before they are bred, a month before they kid i give a cdt vaccine and another shot of bose, the kids come out stronger when you do that, i also keep sweetlix minerals out all the time, i noticed a big difference in the goats coat and general condition when i started on sweetlix, that saves me on the copper boluses, even though i may do that once or twice a year, goats aren't as resilient as once thought, i'm praying for an uneventful kidding season, i have 2 does that look like they are going to have quads, i've got my easy milker, bottles and nipples ready

I have only seen 1 quad....but we are having more triplets than ever this year.....

With that many losses it problably is a contagious disease. There are several that cause abortion epidemics in herds. I would take one to the vet to have it diagnosed, or if you can't do that definitely give LA200 or something similar to all your goats even the ones that aren't bred or aren't due yet.

yesterday i went out to the barn and one of my does aborted her twins, she hasn't been looking the best for a few days plus it's been so cold, she had a baby last summer with no problems, i gave her a shot of bose and some power punch, she's all clean in the rear now, she's low doe on the totum pole so i wonder if one of them butted her too hard, guess i'll never know:(

We have friends who are boer goat breeders. Last year they had several kids die with no known causes. When the third died they had him autopsied (spelling?) The vet found a parasite- not one killed by Ivomectin or available wormers. They had to mix a special med into the water for 30 days for all the goats. This took care of it and they did not lose another kid.

I am very sorry, what a heartbreak to lose those kids after waiting so long to get them. Being boers, triplets and quads should not be a problem. We love our boer goats!
