I'm really worried, I got a Nigerian dwarf boy who is nine weeks old, and he is peeing odd urine. His urine comes out clear, and then dries to a red! What could this be? He doesn't look bloated, hes active/walking around, I dont know what to think! Any help is appreciated!

Good morning! I have 2 ND goats who are both 6 months old. Sometimes their urine gets dark (reddish brown) depending on what they have eaten. One reason is if they eat a good amount of fruit - mine love apples, grapes, and bananas. The fruit is acidic and causes the dark urine. That's not to say it couldn't be something else.

Is your male wethered?

What does he eat? Some foods are not recommended for Male goats because they can cause calculi that can block his urethra which is very serious and often deadly.

Is he a single goat or do you have others? Goats are herd animals and don't do well alone (i.e. without other goats, or even a donkey, sheep or such) - they can get very depressed.

Is he drinking plenty of water? Dehydration can also cause very dark urine.

How long have you had your boy? Is he your first goat?

NG are a ton of fun but they are also mischievous little escape artists :barnieI continuously look for information and advice to help make sure I'm keeping them safe and healthy. You can find lots of good information & advice here but also check out these sites (if you haven't already)!
