Goat info appreciated :)

My DH just brought home 6 more goats. two babys one is a boar/spanish cross the other a boar I am bottle feeding them. then he got 4 pygmies. three does and a billie. So far they are very good. They have fit into our little herd fine. We have never had a problem with the goats getting out. We have plenty of things for them to climb on and they have acdess to the large paddock with lots of scrub oaks to chew. We also saw some Alpines this weekend Thats the next ones he will be getting They were beautiful and very friendly. One of the does practically climbed into my DH lap wheile we were visiting the farm.

Lot of great info here. I just want to say make sure your fence is very sturdy. My boy (wether) pygmy has broken our 6 ft privacy fence in over 10 places. He just keeps pushing & pushing until he breaks the boards. The pen they live in is 1x2 weld wire and so far I have only had to repair it a few times. The minute he runs out of hay he is going to try to bust out. He is fat and happy (as long as he has food every minute of everyday) and wants to make sure I keep him that way! Good luck & remember they might be a little work and a hassle every now and then but they sure are fun.

intownfarm...If you get him a little goat friend, he may not try and bust up your fence so much. Goats are definitely herd animals and if they don't have any goats to play with they look to people to be their herd. The first time we had goats, they both were attacked by a neighbor dog and one had to be to put to sleep because his injuries were so severe. The remaining goat became very destructive and needy. Once we got him a buddy, he calmed down quite a bit and stopped wrecking the fence.

I am looking at getting some nigerian dwarfs, and have done a lot of reading in the Webgoat.com site in the 'coffee shop'. I would suggest you spend some time there. You can read anything without making a response without signing up.

I have been using this goat forum for info.

We resently purchased a darling little 13 wk old Toggenburg doe. She is so sweet. We call her Lady. ( I tried resizing the pic in photo bucket but it doesn't seem to be working )

Goats are a lot of work! Dont get me wrong I really enjoy mine. They have to be wormed regularly and hooves trimmed, I raise boer goats. I had old fertilizer bubbles give to me that I cut in half to make houses and I had lots of net wire and posts given to me and Im still in the whole by thousands of dollars. The broke into my chicken yard so my chickens are free roaming. I have to have electic fence to keep them in. Theres lots to consider, do you want a pair for breeding pets or just yard mowing? They dont thrive well alone, you should research thoroughly! I probly wouldnt have went the route with mine if Id researched more.
