goat kid with scours

Right now we have 4 bottle babies on Sav-a-Kid milk replacer. For some reason lots of people have had bad experiences with kid milk replacer, but we seem to be just the opposite. When our guys get a touch of scours, we add one tablespoon of plain yougurt to a bottle of milk and that works just fine. You should have CD anti-toxin on hand and Tetanus anti-toxin on hand. Both will help clear their system of the bad things. We inject SQ with both. The other thing that helps is to split the feedings. Give 5 ounces, then wait 15 minutes and give another 5 ounces. Slowing down their eating helps with scours also.

I do NOT add baking soda, it only serves to unbalance the rumen. Baking soda is great for treating floppy kid syndrome, other than that, use if for your baking please. A goats stomach (even a baby goat) is alkaline, not acidic like ours. Even a little baking soda can change the ph of the rumen, with terrible results. If you have been using it for years, you may have gotten away with it, but you were not providing the best chance for your babies.

I agree with this post. Baking soda can constipate your kids quickly. Your best bet always is to get their digestive system on track with the correct bacterias that are found in yogurt or Pro-Biotic paste.
