The nasty taste is gone!!!!!! It's delicious, even my husband likes to drink it now. It must have been the colostrum, she's on the same feed. She kidded two weeks ago today.
Glad it has gotten better. I know I was really worried when our doe's milk tasted so bad at first. I'm sure you are as happy as I am to have tasty milk!
Yes it's a relief! I can't say what it had been compared to. I was worried my whole goat episode was going to be a disaster and we'd have a ton of milk that we couldn't use. We do have a ton of milk, but it's good!
My MIL wants us to get together soon and make soap. Thankfully i'm blessed with a great MIL, and she knows a lot about homeopathy, so we should create some nice soaps. I'd like to try making hard cheeses soon too. My DH hates chevre, although I love it, so i'll have to make a little for me.
I hadn't posted before...but the answer is obvious...it's colostrum! I don't care what anyone says...it's there for two weeks and it tastes like, well, blegh.
Always wait two weeks before milking for consumption. For one, the dewormer you should have given the doe the day she kidded will be out of her system well enough for the withdrawl period to be over. For two...BLEGH!
If you must milk before 2 weeks, label it "Late Colostrum" and freeze it for future bottle babies.
The sooner the better...then again in 10 days to be safe...sometimes I forget also and try to do it the next day but sometimes life gets in the way and its a week later...so worm her as soon as you can and when I worm I dont throw out the milk I give it to the dogs and after 2 days we start drinking it again...glad she got it worked out...
Yup, what Chaty said. I usually do ivermec the day of, then valbazen 10 days later (because they're open and will be for awhile so no danger of fetal harm)
Hello. I am new here. I've been checking out different sites and found this. I have Lamanchas and a Nubian. All due to freshen late April-early May. I cannot wait to get goat milk again! I had to dry them all up last month and have been getting Jersey milk from a friend. And it's just a hassel to have to go buy milk when I have been so used to just having it right here all the time.
SO i just had to say that I always worm the day they kid or a few days later. Then I never use the milk til 2-3 weeks later. I'll taste it and when it's "normal" to me, then we start putting kids up at night and milk in the morning til the kids are 6-8 weeks old. Then wean them and on to twice a day milking.
I have had to go ahead and milk the does right after for several days til the kids can drink enough to not cause mastitis. And I have had twins that would just nurse on one side even though both teats were the same size. So I would have to milk her out a few times a day. I just freeze the milk for emergencies.
I could talk goats all day but will stop now. Good luck with you goats, Cara.
We love to talk goats, and chickens... well we mostly love to talk!
How lucky having access to Jersey milk! I grew up in England and miss being able to buy Jersey milk. That is some delicious stuff!
kannm i'm sorry I don't have any soap recipes yet. Hoegger Goat Supply have a goat milk soap recipe book that looks good, and it's only $6.50. I think their catalog said it has 20 recipes.
