Goat Thread!

So shes beginning to have some white milky colored discharge as of a few hours ago. Is this normal, or mean anything? Her bag seems pretty full as well.

She looks pretty close to me, and I'm pretty sure the discharge is pretty normal. But, like I said, I'm no expert so you may want a second opinion.

Just wanted to join in the goat fun! I got three wethers in the summer to start and see how I liked keeping goats wtih the plan that if I hated them, in the freezer they'd go. The plan was to raise meat goats for my dogs as one of my dogs was severely epileptic and goat was one of the few proteins she could have. I got the goats, but sadly lost the dog to her epi a couple months later. So, I'll carry on with my goat plan and raise some for meat for myself...the rest of the dogs can have the bones and such. Anyways, I LOVE my boys, so will get a couple doelings this summer, let them grow up a bit, then get a buckling next year and breed the girls next winter. I have 2.5 acres of broom and blackberries and brush for them to clear and so far, the boys are doing an awesome job.

Here's a pic from the summer. They are now bigger, fatter and fluffier. haha! From left, Crackle, Pop and Snap.

Hello! Welcome to the goat thread! They are adorable! They loook very similar to my boys, I will have to find pics of them to share. Best of luck with your plan, I'm wanting to do something similar, except I will be paying a stud fee because I don't want my own buck just yet.

And here's Elliot. They look pretty small in the pictures, but they are BIG boys in real life. They're wethers and just my pets.

ETA: Sorry for their disheveled look. They have their nice, thick winter coats right now and they haven't had a bath since around August so they're looking a bit messy!

Spring is just around the corner, and I'm so looking forward to it! In the next two weeks I am making visits to farms where there are Nigerian Dwarf Goats being bred and raised. One of the owners is all about dam feeding, the other is all about bottle feeding. I have mixed emotions on this topic. I understand how some breeders feel dam raised gives the kids the best start, and I also understand the human contact through bottle feeding makes for friendlier goats. Please offer your opinions. I am planning to get a pregnant doe and another doeling to begin with. I have done more reading and research, spoke with the area Vet, and am currently looking for a good provider of hay. I also have a few contacts,for emergencies. Our goat barn is up and ready. There's a large fenced in area and large wooden spools for the goats to play on. I just need to figure out which goats I want to purchase.

Dam raised all the way. Not only does it have healthier stronger goats but it also allows for the kid to develop a relationship with the other goats rather than an unhealthy relationship with humans. Only time kids really ever should be bottle fed is if the dam rejects the kid or its a life or death situation.
