Goats as a deterent for predators?

Try getting a few guinea fowl. They will yell and scream when a preditor is near, and that will let you know when one is near and it might drive the preditor away too.

tell me more about how chicken feed can kill a goat please. this is a pygmy and supposedly can eat anything.

edit: I have found a thread on it here on this forum, and out there in the WWW. So if I am getting this right they can eat some grain as that is normal, as long as they are mainly eating their goat pellets?

the pygmy goat faq says they need to eat some grain, and tells you how to get them to start. Also says they are less likely to eat off the ground and will eat out of their buckets, so I am hoping when I throw scratch grains out it will not consume enough to be hazardous.

If that is the case I will have to change over my chicken feeders to a less goat friendly approach.

does that sound correct?

Also the Dumour Goat feed is grain as the first ingredient and says can be fed as a sole food source.... I am very confused.

Fainting goats,The coyote runs up to grab your chickens and the goat faints. Then runs off with the goat, problem solved, chickens safe.My goats would not like to hear me now.

Is your pygmy a doe, buck or wether? That also makes a difference on what they are fed, but no goat should be eating chicken food. If your goat is not being used for breeding, they don't need any grains at all, just good grass hay, mine are all nice and fat, people often think they are pg, just from hay. If I was breeding, they would be on grains, but I am not right now. Bucks never need grains and wethers especially should never have them, as they are very prone to urinary calculi and it will kill them quickly if they get it. That is why you shouldn't feed straight alfalfa hay, especially 2nd or 3rd cutting, too hot and will cause stones.

The reality is goats will eat till they are ready to explode and yes they will eat off the ground, under the ground, over the ground, etc...

My pigs are pickier than the goats, especially when it comes to anything the goat deems yummy!

Agreed, mine have gotten into the feed area before and we eat anything they can get into, rabbit feed, chicken, goose, duck, doesn't matter to them and them will eat until I drag them out or the bags are empty. They then get diarrhea, stomach aches and can bloat, so be very careful. Oh and do they learn their lesson from this distress? NOPE! They will do it again, the minute they can!
