It's not the fault of pitbulls that they are the Arnold Schwarzeneggers of the dog world. Could you imagine the havoc that a 90lb Chihuahua would cause? Talk about aggressive. Also I want it to be said that pitbulls are known for dog aggression. Not aggression towards people. A fighting dog that couldn't be handled is useless and dangerous. They can be made aggressive the same way a golden retriever can be made aggressive.

I am from the south part of the state. The reason it took so long to ban dog fighting here is the culture. As a result, the pit bull population has some really nasty genes for agression that have been bread in. I really understand people's wanting to defend the breed, because there are good dogs in any breed. However, genetics is big in dogs. I have never seen a great dane who wasn't calm. I havn't ever seen a young jack russell terrier who wasn't hyper. I think the agressive breeding is much more widespread than just NM. There is a reason the pit bull dogs have a bad name "in general", excluding the great percent of the dogs who if raised and treated right are wonderful pets. If my grandkids were near a bear and I had the choice of "pit bull nearby - no pit bull nearby" I choose no pit bull and let the kids scare it and run on their own. If I had the choice of a regular hound dog, I would want it around. These are just my personal preferences based on my personal observations of the world. If you are not aware of the "pit bull atacking kids" problem I have the following links, just a couple of quick hits not comprehensive. Pit bulls do attack kids on occasion and rip their faces off, there is unfortunately no debate on that.

Pitbulls have attacked people. No one is denying that, what's your point? You make a lot of broad generalizations. You argument is based on opinion not facts. All great danes are calm and Jack Russels are hyper, most pitbull owners are bad? It's hard to debate opinions. Come with facts if you want to prove a point.

Here are some facts:

And here is some fear mongering;

God sends his angels in all shapes and forms. Your grandchildren had angels in the form of dogs protecting them today!

i think everyone has heard the stories. that is why we were trying to be specific to our experiences. though i love small dogs (much prefer over big dogs) the only time i've been actually bitten is by a small one from a neighbor.

i'm in rural los lunas. i like going down further south, but when i come back up i25, i always get stopped by imigration. lol. i guess i fit the profile of something or other.

we weren't there, panner123 was. all we can go with is what he said. he believes the pitties saved the grandkids. i believe him. those pitties were in the right place at the right time. thank god.

my 2 pitties are very protective of children, and are more likely to lick a person to death than hurt them. there are many people who have used pitties for hunting... bears, boars etc. my great pyr was the same protective way, and there are videos of pyrs fighting bears on the internet to defend their charges. no one is doubting they (pyrs) are generally a laid back dog but any dog will protect if it feels the need.

also there are plenty of dog breeds that have been so inbred that they are unstable. backyard breeders and puppy mills are not always as careful as they should be. the way a dog is trained / raised also has a tremendous influence.

Again its the bad pits that you hear about, according to your theory, most men are murderers/ rapist, and all around bad people. So by just what I read in my paper and hear on the news, men should be bannished and outlawed too. Whens the last good article about teeneagers???

Yes pits have attacked but so have pinchers, german shepards, dalmations, etc.... I have only heard one good story lately about dogs and that was a golden lab that performed HYMLICK by jumping on its owners chest and dislodged food, probably thought when owner fell she was playing, but it was a feel good piece that made national news. There are lots of kids getting bit, and most probably deserve it, but most are not bit by pits, and lots are by thier own dogs. So maybe no one should be allowed to own a dog????

edited to add that yes St. Bernards have been known to attack to(remember CUJO), but how often have you heard of that?

I think this thread is about how happy the poster is that his grandkids are safe, not about if pits are good, safe dogs or not. How about we just express our happiness that those kids are safe and not turn this thread into a dog bashing thread.
