Sorry, I didn't mean to state good dog--bad dog. It was that these three dogs were in the right spot at the right time. And I'm thankful. It just happened that they were pits. I agree with all those that stated other dogs would have handled it differently. But, once the bear was dead the dogs just left and I have no idea to where or where they came from. Like I said, no one within five miles of where I live owns a pit bull.
If I ever see them again, you can bet I will feed them, might even give them a beer if they want one. Agian, I am not a pit bull person, these dogs just were. Had it been a jacck russel or a great dane, I would feel the same way towards them.

From an outside perspective I would say "thank god for the dogs and you" They distracted the bear and gave you precious moments to draw a bead on the bear. Without the distraction you could have lost a grandchild. Secondly I would have to commend you on shooting skills to be able to drop the bear in all that confusion rather than freezing up as many would.

I've had the experience of a charging bear that had "no fear of humans". My German Shepherd stepped in and went head to head with the bear or I would have been dead. People leaving garbage out, feeding wildlife and the population density increasing in rural areas all add up to create problems like this.

We are neighbors, as I live in Auburn.... thank you Jesus that those dogs were there. Definitely sounds like they were sent to protect the grandkids. Gives you a whole new appreciation for their lives.

As a pitbull owner I would say they have a bad rep for a VERY good reason. IDIOT OWNERS and breeders! Every breed has its good points and bad points and if an owner isn't aware of those characteristics these will be issues. Just like any other breed of dog Bad owners = a problem dog.

I have a German Shepherd that came from heavy service dog and competitive schutzhund lines. Thus he is not typical of the German shepherd you commonly see. I would hate to see what would have happened had this dog was raised by an owner with no knowledge of the characteristics of a dog like this. I have no doubts he would have been dangerous rather than the dog he is.

But back to the topic at hand. If the bear in question was chasing or stalking your grandchildren simple yelling and noise would not have frightened this one off. Good thing you had a gun and know how to use it.

Not alot to add, but if you've never seen a hyper dane you can come over and meet my Iris, she's nearly 5 (Nov. 13) and finally calming down. But she has been my wild child. She's not the only hyper dane I've known. Now if you met her in public you'd think she was a very calm, well behaved dog, but that is because she has been very well trained and socialized.

As for pits, I have yet to meet a mean one. I've met a few that were dog aggressive, but all have been very people friendly.

Now I am very glad to hear these dogs were there to help protect the children. Although I am very against dogs running loose, especially dogs with bad reps already. Maybe these guys just slipped out somehow, just a one time thing (clearly the perfect time).
