I have 3 Orpingtons. We are in a cold snap but so far I have not used any supplemental heat (and I usually don’t). I have an attached run that is covered in 20 ml clear vinyl. It is supposed to get down to 14 tomorrow night, 11 Sunday night and 7 Monday night and then up to 16 Tuesday and about those night time temps at least through next Saturday. I have a clamp on brooder lamp that has a 120v 250 w red bulb and a cage over the light. The coop is pretty good size (I can stand up in it). Is it ok do y’all think to use it during these next few very cold nights. It won’t keep the chickens awake or stress them out will it? The crazy things sleep in the nesting box which juts out from the coop or I wouldn’t worry about it as much

This is my first winter with chickens. This week has been cold. Last night It got down to. Zero F, 7 in the coop. No heat, no problems. They are not fans of the snow, but cold seems to not be an issue.

Here winter is long....one year our last snowfall was on June 6th. Snaps of two weeks or so with below zero temps are not unusual. I didn't do heat or insulation, and even my Silkies went outside when it was as low as 9 degrees. I think you're okay. :thumbsup

This is my first winter with them as well and mine have been out for the past few days and it has gotten down to 3 degrees F. They spend most of the time outside, despite the cold! I also have an Orpington.

We have 8 red sex link and 2 Easter egg
Here it has been down to -12 and we will see -17 and -19 Sunday through next Thursday. We don’t use any supplement heat. When it drops that low I keep them locked in the coop itself and it’s stays about 10to 20 degrees in the coop!
