My 5 chicks are about 6 weeks old now and they have been in the garage in a playpen unheated for the last 3 weeks. No problems, they seem to keep each other warm. We are almost done with the coop and will be putting them outside here soon. the temps for this week will be around 40-mid 40's at night. I imagine I don't need a heat source for them out there? but have seen people recommending a light? I just want to make sure before i put them out for the night.

I raise mine in a brooder in the coop. I take the heat source away at about 4-1/2 to 5 weeks of age. I turn off all lights at night. I have not lost one yet doing this.

I don't know what else to say.

You will get many opinions, but I put my girls out at 6 weeks, no lamp and temps in the 40's at night.. They did perfect!!

I put ine out at 5-6 weeks and they're fine (no heat or light.) I put mine in the coop only for a few days before letting them out in the run and so they could see the coop as home. They go right back in now at night or during cold/rain. A light can be helpful if they don't go back in. I used a solar light the first few days but it was unnecessary.

I was going to ask the same questions, mine are 1 month old, and I took the heat lamp away today, but worry bout putting them in the coop since it still gets down to the 30's. At night. So will they be ok with heat lamp in the coop, or will they be ok in there bin all together with out heat?

I have this same questions. We're still in the 32's at night too and looking at moving the coop outside this weekend. I'd be interested to see the what others think.
