I have discovered that chicks will let you know when they're ready to fly to the coop. After checking on the girls this morning I came sauntering in whistling the Great Escape theme and was then asked by my wife what that song was. Well it seems that 4 of the 8 girls made a bit of a prison break last night. I caught one going over the fence but there were 3 others scattered around the upstairs of the garage. It was really cute how they perched around looking at me with an expression like "Did I do something wrong?"

They are really getting friendly too. They now run to my feet until the hand spooks them away.

oh yes when you open the door to the brooder and they all come flying out at you..............Yep it is a good time to move them, (this happened to me)
They are cute when they look at you in that chicken way aren't they. As for them comming upto you till the hand scares them away put a treat in your hand and lower it real slow they will get used to it I have one now that comes to me and want's me to pick it up it will wait till I move my hand slowly down to it and then it hops on to it the rest are all like nope thats ok were good right here on the ground

They are just so lovable and cute.

Same thing here lol. I will go to open the brooder to move the chicks outside for a few hours, and the two girls Joon and Munk fly up to the edge as soon as the top comes off. The roo stays back usually though, until I have the girls ready to go. Then he is following QUICKLY. lol!

And when I catch them to bring them in I only catch the pullets (they are very tame) and Sulo, the roo, jumps into the transport bin after them so I don't need to chase around trying to catch him

sorry this a newbie questions but

When should I be moving them outside? What age?
Can I put them out before they are feathered.

I live it florida so it doesn't get very cold at night.

I think that the consensus seems to be when they are mostly feathered which varies by breed. On cool nights I do give them a lamp for some warmth.

The girls fear the hand but will run right back if they see something in it. And they crowd the edge of the pen when I leave. Run away... Run back... They're a hoot.

One day a week ago I went into the garage and heard a noise in a box. Thinking we had a mouse or snake, I got a stick and carefully lifted one of the flaps. Much to my surprise a litte white rooster head popped out and looked at me like "What?" They moved to the coop this week at 8 weeks old. During clean up of the garage, we have found poops in the strangest places. Apparently, they had been able to get out for some time!
