Sorry...new at this....are we admiring a lack of shafting? If so, congratulations!!

Yes, no shafting. hard to believe. If I can only get the entire plumage that way...but I'll take it one step at a time. Thank you.

Vicki, not sure that I, personally, fixed anything to be honest. I think it was just that the planets were aligned just right and the moon was at a perfect phase.

The weirdest thing is that the parents are the two blondest and the pullet has the most shafting of all my girls. Go figure. All my former theories are out the window. Just goes to show you, these newly imported babies have genetics that are across a full spectrum. The parents are Rock Star and Victoria. (Greenfire x Heirloom Orps)

The one thing that I have learned is that I need a manicure. Pronto.

I don't think I've ever seen a gold laced anything without visible feather shafts (my experience is pretty non existent... A couple hours of google searching because I've seen it mentioned) Is this something that exists or a "challenge accepted" project of yours to eliminate "shafting" on your birds?

DragonLady did it. She challenged me to do so. I'm not sure if I can make it happen again. I'm hoping to though.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much work the GL need. But, it's all in good fun. I just want the variety to keep moving forward. They're the most beautiful birds!

Now the advice that Bob Follows gave me comes to mind. He didn't advise outcrossing to black, like the Germans and the French. He had told me to outcross to Buff. (Not to mention DragonLady's advice too.)

I'll have to post pictures of the parents, then show you the offspring. Maybe with everyone pulling in their genetic knowledge we can figure out how it occurred and make it happen again.

These are both old pictures of when they were quite young. I darkened Rock Star's picture so that you can see the shafting a little easier. Notice that Victoria is really blonde, her ground color is very uneven, and is shafted everywhere. And on my screen, I can easily see the shafting in Rock Star's chest. And he too is very uneven.

I'll post pictures of the offspring, Chip (a Chip off the old "rock"), when I return from my Dr's appointment. I've re-injured my rotary cuff.

OK, I'm back. My camera is heavy and I couldn't hold it up very well since my shoulder isn't cooperating.

Here's a picture of Chip. After close examination, he is only shafted in the shoulders!!!

And, that will be covered up by his hackle feathers so it won't bother me 24/7

Still needs work, but a wonderfully hopeful start for this Fall's breeding if his type ends up worthy of progeny. I tried to photograph his shoulder for you to see the shafting. But he was eating and moving.



Chip's back. If you compare him to the bird on the right, you can compare the shafting. Chip's ground color isn't even, but he'll even out a little bit more when he gets his juvenile feathers, I hope. I'm thinking this because his first feathers are already more chestnut...so maybe his shoulders will get darker? One more thing I hadn't noticed

his hackle feathers are completely laced. His dad's aren't.


Now this picture is for Nellie. I wanted her to see the color of my Greenfire girls. Nellie, I wonder if Greenfire changed their cock bird between your birds and mine? The one on the top is leaning more towards blonde, but the other two, albeit shafted and a bit uneven, have a nice chestnut color. You can tell I didn't breed the one in the middle. She's an awful egg layer.

This is a blurry picture of his beautiful non shafted feathers. Not sure if you can see the green sheen in his lacing. Sweet baby. Now he needs to grow and I need to put my arm in my sling. No more pictures.

Dee, that is absolutly amazing! You are doing such good work with this..going to be such fun to follow! such interesting advise to use buff..I think the faces and eyes also are closer also than the blks..Just something I noticed along the line as you were doing this.
