so I have my very first chicks we got about 4 1/2 weeks ago so they’re 5 weeks old now. I have 2 buff orpingtons and 2 glw. All 4 are supposed to be puppets however I have noticed that one of my “girls” has started developing a much more noticeable deeper red comb. Everything I’ve Red indicates this is a sign of a roo. I’m ok if Goldie turns out to be a roo but I’m just trying to figure out if she is a he or not. Any thoughts? First 4 pics are Goldie my one in thinking may be a roo. The last 2 are my other glw who i feel pretty confident is a pullet.

:confused::confused:
This is pretty red for a 5 week old chick. I am not an expert though, so maybe there is hope. For a pullet still. Either way, beautiful bird!

I got them on March 9th and they were about 3 days old so that should put them at about 5 weeks old. I noticed “Goldie’s” comb was a lot redder last week and it seems to have gotten more pronounced. I figured I’d look to you all since this is my first time with chicks let alone chickens and I’m clueless.:confused:

Yup.. that's a cockerel if it is really only 5 wks.. are you sure? It looks older to me:idunno

ok, then it's a cockerel.

I'm actually leaning towards pretty pullet for now, unless things change in the coming weeks. :)

Thus far, the plumage pattern is nice and even....not terribly patchy. It's common for Wyandotte pullets to pink up early.

Ditto this. I'd expect to see a messier pattern if the chick were male.
