Golden Comet Chickens, HELP!

We have 5 hens and 1 rooster. They are our first chickens and they are very friendly and excellent egg layers. Minestarted laying this past week and we get at least 4 per day. We don't even have a light in there!

I have had alot of chickens in the past years. But I have never had the golden comets until lately.. I bought 6 hens and a roo from a fellow that lives local. So far I love them. They are laying big eggs and most days they all lay an egg.

If anyone is interested in any eggs. I could sell some. Just PM me a message. They were hatched this past spring and they are very calm birds compaired to some other breeds I have had in the past. I think you all will love them too.

I will try to post some better pictures.

I am so glad to hear this! My Husband and I just ordered some Golden Comets and they should be arriving any day!!! VERY excited about our new babies! This will be our first experience raising chickens and I am so ear to learn! The pictures and comments of and about them are just too cute! - Elizabeth

I just want to warn everyone out there of the hybrid chickens many farm stores are selling. These Chickens are wonderful to own but if you are like me and get attached to your animals these birds are not for you.
Hybrid comets (Golden comets or sex linked –Great egg layers. Not hardy, not strong. Extremely friendly personalities. Not a good bird to own. Produced by commercial companies to lay eggs; a great deal of eggs in a short time and then they get sick and die. Their little bodies can’t handle this fast egg laying production. They start to shut down after 2 or 3 years. They end up egg bound and die. Now I had 13 of them and have about 7 left, and 3 are sick. I have saved some only to have the eggs get stuck again later. I did my research because I also own New Hampshire reds and Light Sussex both very hardy dual purpose birds that never get sick, never get egg bound. My husband and I feel robbed because although they are just chickens they were so friendly we named them and loved them and now we feel lied to and cheated. Save yourself the grief- Don't buy Golden Comets!!!!!!!

wow... we have golden comets and have no problems with them so far. They are very hardy and haven no problems with being egg bound. Do you think it might be the hatchery you got them from? I'm not sure you can label them all that way. I have a friend who's only had heritage breeds and tons of them have died... by that standard i shouldn't buy or get attached to heritage breeds. Birds are birds and just like people some live longer than others and some have better genetics.

I have no idea what kind of problems may come down the line but I have 3 Golden Comets. Yes they lay great but one of them turned into an egg eater and has involved the whole flock. Out of 14 girls, I'm lucky if I get 1-2 eggs a day. My girls are only a little more than a year old now and so far are still laying but the egg eating is a rotten trick. I am going to build a roll away nesting box wall in my coop and hopefully stop this. If not, I know who it is and will cull the 2 worst. They do lay well in cold weather but that is when the first one started eating the eggs. No reason to do so either. They have the best I can get for them and their coop never went below 40 degrees. Loving but mine have some real issues.

I have five golden comet girls and on rir. I love them all!! This is my first time having chickens; they are hours of entertainment and fun. Very friendly and unique personalities.

I am finding this to be true, at 2 years 2 of my 6 have died, one mysteriously one after a prolonged molt. They are sweet little things but I don't think I will ever get them again

We have one Golden Comet, Cornelia, and we love her! One thing odd, everyone says they start laying very early, but Cornelia didn't start until 21 weeks (same as the rest of our girls). She was pretty shy until just before she started laying, but now she's very friendly. I call her my picky eater because she will lose interest in treats that are not her absolute favorites...but if it's something she loves, look out! Once she stole the whole bag of treats out of my hand and I had to chase her across the yard to get it back
