My golden comet is little more than a year old. She has started having "spells" where she stands in one spot, is clearly not feeling 100%, seem's disoriented like she's out of it. She is by far my best layer (almost every day) so it's noticeable when she doesn't lay an egg. Her rear seem's like it's pulsing and doesn't Mimi.jpg seem it's normal size. When this occurs she typically lays a soft egg on the roost over night. What could this be? If there is something I can do to control or even prevent this I will but I have not idea what is happening? It typically only lasts a day or so then she is right back to her normal routine. HELP!!!

Have seen this happen when a softie is coming down the pike.
First time I saw it it freaked me out...I kept watching her and all of a sudden she was fine pecking around, and I found a softie on the ground where she had been standing.
It must 'feel' weird...and it's harder for the contractions to move a soft shell egg.
That's why many softies are laid off the roost at night.

It typically only lasts a day or so then she is right back to her normal routine.
What does this mean?
Does she go back to laying hard eggs between these 'spells'?
Does she lay multiple softies between laying hard eggs?
..or like 1 day soft then 4 days hard then soft again?

It's difficult to say what the problem might be.
High production birds are susceptible to reproductive tracts issues.
First look at diet.
What all and how exactly are you feeding?
What is the protein and calcium percentage of the feed?
How much and waht kind of 'treats' might be given?
Do you have oyster and/or egg shells available in a separate container?

This is happening to my EE. I cut down the "treats" and started giving them more calcium, much to all their chagrin. I've been scrambling eggs with shell on, more oyster mixed in with their food.

My girl was having real issues over the weekend. I had to epsom salt soak her, feed her tums in a slurry and pull out a soft shell that was kind of stuck. She was really lethargic for a morning but she's popped back. Yesterday I did find a shell less egg in the yard but she's acting normal and her bum looks clean now. I was freaking out!

Lesson learned back to their feed, less snacks.
