Hey all.

My family just recently purchased our first chickens, some Golden Comet Pullets. They were 8 weeks when we got them, and now they're about 18 weeks. Everything I've been reading says that this breed starts laying around 16 weeks, but we haven't seen any eggs yet. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

16 weeks is possible, but they can wait until 24 or even 26 weeks sometimes! Just be patient, and look for their faces and combs to get really, really red, which is a sign that they're close to laying.

Their combs have been getting redder and growing more, but we still haven't seen any eggs.

I've also heard that some chickens will do this special squat that shows they're getting ready to lay. My girls haven't exactly been doing that, but since they're free range I'm wondering if they could be laying already but somewhere in the yard rather than in the nest boxes in the coop?
