I'm getting 3 golden comets in April and I'm very excited, but I want to know about the breed. I know they are good layers but I don't know about their personality. I also have two dogs, will they get stressed with my puppy at their door? Thanks

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Golden comets, also known as sex-links, cinnamon queens and red star, is an egg-cellent egg layer! They are machines! If tamed while young, they make friendly pets. They forage very well and rarely go broody. Being heat hardy, they love ranging and don't do super well in tight confinement.

You need to be very careful with your dog. Chickens and dogs do not mix. If he is a puppy then he should be easier to tame. But be very careful. Here are two links on info on dogs and chickens.

Good luck with your future flock!

I love my golden comets. Sometimes the dogs chase them then they go back to pecking like nothing happened. They like to be petted, eat from my hand, and come when i call them . They love hulled sunflower seeds , it's a treat they eat out my hand.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Golden Comet is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links, which are produced by crossing a red gene rooster with a silver gene hen. Not only can the resulting offspring be sexed by color at hatching but they are egg laying machines, outlaying either parent breed. It's one of the interesting quirks of hybridization. You should get loads of eggs from those three girls.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Golden Comet.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Please keep puppy and chickens well separated. First line of chicken predators is usually the owners own dogs. Dogs play and chase chickens = dead chickens. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog.

So glad you could join our community! Definitely keep the dogs away from the chicks or chickens. The two should never meet.

Make yourself at home here and we do welcome you to our flock!

Welcome to the coop!
Golden Comets (also know as red sexlinks, red star, and several other names) are egg laying machines. I have six, and they rarely skip an egg-laying day!
The community here is very friendly, with some very knowledgeable people. You'll like it here :)
