I am going this afternoon to pick up some GLW's at the farm store (I tell you I'm addicted, I don't know how I'll explain this to my wife!! I said I just wanted 4-5 chicks, this will be chicks 19, 20 & 21 with 19 eggs in the incubator!!!

I know there is no 100% tried and true set way to sex most chicks but is there anything with GLW's that would give you a better idea that you were picking out females? Like on Barred Rocks I have read the darker the legs the better chance you have of getting a female, etc.

Just thought I would ask!

Thanks! I'll post pictures later tonight of my new chicks (if I can sneak them in the brooder!!

I've heard of people holding chicks upside down and that the males will struggle and the females won't. I've never tried it myself though.

Well, the very helpful clerk that I talked to on the phone earlier today couldn't tell the difference on the signs between "Golden" and "Silver". They only had Silver Laced Wyandottes.

I'm not sure how to pick out gender chicks, but when I went to get my chicks, the clerk picked out ones that were just standing still, because they were easier to catch.

Try to get the more active ones, they are likely to be more healthy and less lazy when they grow older. The lazy chick the clerk picked out is now a chicken that does nothing but stand at the feed tray and eat.
