Goldfish Breeding?

10 gallons is WAY WAY to small for 2 goldfish much less those others also you must be VERYVERY wary of keeping a pleco with goldies goldies tend to "Rest" at night and plecos LOVE to eat there slime coating and will basically eat the fishs scales and flesh so if you ever notice open sores on your goldies thats what its from.
if i were you i would remove the pleco and the cory cats and take out ALL tank deco to give the goldys more swimming room you wont be able to save babies but seriously would you really want 20 more goldfish in just a 10 gallon? and dont htink that just becuase the water is clear means its clean ammonia and nitrates can be deathly high in crystal clear water.

want a good alternative to a new tank? pick your two goldies up a plastic storage tote pop a good filter on their and clean the tank every few days.

Oh I didn't know that. I was told fish need 1 gallon per fish. And the babies aren't gonna stay very long since their the ones that are going to be fed to the ducks. I didn't know plecos will eat my goldfish. The goldfish are much bigger than any other fish in the tank. I have a smaller maybe 5 gallon plastic tote I could put some fish in until I can get another tank or tote.

Goldfish really should have 40 gallons EACH. You can get away with a couple of them in a 50 gallon tank if you have excellent filtration, but spawining will mess that up in a big way. When they spawn, they foul the water horribly. First you will see a lot of foam on the water and a horrible ammonia smell. Your water quality is going bad very quickly at this point. They will glue their eggs to floating plant roots or spawning brushes but the ones that are not glued down will get sucked up by the filter, clogging it pretty quick. The fish will eat all they can, they will strip them off of the plant roots. The increase in their diet will foul the tank's water even futher. And if you are lucky enough to get some to hatch, the parents will gobble them up when they start swimming, or the filter will suck them up. They are the size of an eyelash when they hatch.

OK...so you want to spawn? Here's how you do it. First, are you sure one is male and one is female? And are they big enough? If they are in a 10 gallon tank, they may be too young to spawn, but in case they are, here's how to do it.

To spawn fish successfully, you should set up a kiddy pool outside (when weather permits). Get the water dechlorinated, etc. Don't worry about filtration yet....the pool is big enough you won't need it for a while. Just do 10% water changes per day instead. And have some ammonia neutralizer on hand, prior to spawning. Pond Prime is a good one to get. Put a bunch of water hyacinth in the pool or even cotton mop heads. When a full moon is about to happen (probably the one in may or june), do a 50% water change in the pool. The combination of the cooler water and the full moom will often make them spawn. You will know if they did....the foam on the water, the smell and the eggs stuck on everything will tell you. If they spawned, take the parent fish back to the aquarium. You can't leave them with the eggs. Now comes the real work. Get out your water test kit (you have one, right?) and check the water. Fix the ammonia levels ASAP!!! Test the water every day and fix the ammonia as often as necessary. Do water changes too, to flush the nitrates out of the water. Once the eggs hatch, you will need to have food ready to give them. Hatching brine shrimp is a good food source. Also google a food called "golden pearls". It's pretty good too. Keep up with those water changes and testing, and increase food size as the fish grow.

i would put the tropicals (cory cats and pleco in the 5 gallon tote and keep the goldies in the tank.
you dont need a kiddy pool to breed goldies i know people who breed fancies in 40 gallon tanks no problem.
a breeding "mop" is a great idea becuase the eggs are ultr sticky and will become stuck in the mop head you could just take it out after they spawn and move it into another tank.
live baby brine sprimp is the best food sorce for them but its quite doable to feed the new babies finely crushed flake food i know several people who do and breed there goldfish routinly an sell the babys.

I think 1 is a male and 1 female because 1 had a huge belly for awhile. I've had a pregnant fish before and it looked the same. What size are they supposed to be? I don't have a water test kit but I will go get one now that I know they need it. Do I need to put a bubble rock (name? Pumps air) into the pool?

Thank you. I will. I bought the pleco and cory cat to clean my tank would they eat eggs or hatching fish? If I move the pleco and cory cat do I need to put a bubble rock( pumps air) into their tank? I know a couple fish don't need it but most do so I wasn't sure.

during breeding season, you can rub your finger lightly over the gill plates. The male will have small bumps....a roughness to it. These bumps are also on the front edge of the pec fins. Female will stay smooth. Fat belly isn't always a gravid female....it could be swim bladder problems too. And yes....lots of aeration in the pool.
