We ordered 10 hens last Sept, 4 BO's 2 RR's 2 Plymouth Rocks and 2 Light Brahmas. It was my intention to let them free range as I hate to coop anything up. But that plan was nixed when 3 of my girls didn't come home to roost one evening. It was 2 BO's and 1 Light Brahma, Red Ann a RR made it home but as I picked her up I noticed she was wounded. I assume birds of prey got to them. Turns out Red Ann's sister was actually a Roo, now I have "Goldie" a BO sitting on 7 eggs fertilized by Red Rider the only remaining RR. When another hen lays an egg Goldie thinks she need's to get up off of the seven eggs and keep the 1 new egg warm. I'm new to this, I have done a lot of reading on this site over the past few months. Will try and keep yall posted on how she is doing. I hope to hatch some to replace the girls I lost.

I'm sorry to hear about your losses

Thanks, I hope all goes well also! However I get 4 to 5 eggs per day, and the count is not adding up. Goldie is sitting on 8 now and I saw a broken shell on the ground today, not sure what happened. Any ideas on why the others are not laying as usual? Thanks

Goldie has hatched 4 so far, looks like 3 Buff's and a Plymouth Rock. I took them and put them into the brooder since it was storming out, she didn't seem to mind. She went right back to sitting on the other eggs. Will let y'all know how it turns out.
